So that's where we're sneaking out for an exploration of one end of Hempstead Harbor!
This is right at the Rockaway Inlet. The water's beautiful - amazingly clear, for a NYC beach. There used to be a scuba shop here for that reason - shut down now, slated for development.

There I am in my summer duds - it's midafternoon so I'm hiding from the sun in a white shirt & yet another goofy hat (this one - eight bucks at Duane Reade drugstore - cheap, my second favorite price!). Cruising along past a squatter's shack on South Black Banks Hassock. Pretty nice shack. That's an outhouse, though! I refrain from rolling here.
Actually I only rolled a couple of times on this trip - the water, as I'd mentioned, was so cool that I never felt hot! Somehow, when Tony the trip organizer said "shack", I pictured something much, well, shackier. I've heard the islands of Jamaica Bay used to have a lot of these, before it was turned into a wildlife preserve - my image of that has really changed now.
These are actually an old tradition - here in Hempstead Bay, no one is allowed to build new ones, but the families who've lived in these are allowed to continue that tradition. They pay the town a minimal yearly fee. We saw the gentleman who lived here - he drove up in a motorboat; invited me & Walter (who took this) to come up & take a look around, which we thanked him for but the rest of our gang had gone around the corner to the lunch beach already. As we were finishing, in fact, the young man and another gent pulled up on the beach, brought out some rakes & started doing some maintenance (no, he did NOT have to clean up after us!).
Now I might be a trifle envious of him. Later in the day - this was one of a couple of small waterways that we proved beyond the shadow of a doubt were NOT Crooked Creek. Crooked Creek, looked like a possible shortcut back & being back in a marsh, we thought it would make a nice quiet alternative to the bustle of Reynolds Channel.
The area going into the creek, though, was entertainingly (but not worrisomely) mazelike. We all took turns poring over the chart, looking around, and I think everyone who took a shot at navigation was at one point right, then at another point, wrong!
This was one of the wrong moments. In this case, I've just rounded a corner to find the end of the road. My 16 foot boat was a LITTLE easier to turn than Jerry's boat!
We did eventually find Crooked Creek; it turned out to be not half as tiny & dubious as we'd expected it to be from the charts. In fact after this particular dead end, Pete took charge - he'd been pretty sure this was the wrong way even before we started down. He'd taken us almost back to what he was pretty sure was Crooked Creek when a couple of jetskis...
er, didn't go zooming past, didn't prove that we were going the right way, and didn't leave a bubbly wake behind for us to follow past the few remaining attractive blind alleys. Nope, that didn't happen at all.

I usually paddle off the turkey the day after Thanksgiving - this year, with a couple of good paddles lined up not long after the 24th, my guy & I went for a great hike.
