Staten Island Graveyard of Ships « Read Less
Some friends and I paid a visit to the Graveyard of Ships in the Arthur Kill as we were circumnavigating Staten Island by kayak on 7/16/05. It used to be that when a ship had reached the end of it's useful life, it would be brought out here to the Arthur Kill and scuttled - sunk in shallow water & left to rust away. We spent longer here than we should have & getting home was a terrible slog - but I'm glad we did.

Staten Island "Graveyard of Ships" in the Arthur Kill - taken during 7/16/05 circumnavigation of Staten Island - starting & finishing at Pier 63 Maritime. Somewhere around a 50 mile trip. Launched at 6:15 a.m. - returned home sometime in the 8:15 p.m. range so about a 14-hour day.
This was in the section of the ships' graveyard that Steve said was probably the oldest - he's heard these ones are probably old cargo barques & date from the 1800's.
