For this one, only the guides were in kayaks - everybody else was in big plastic canoes. The Bronx River Alliance & the parks department run this as a great way to get people out on the river - at 3 miles of basically flat water with a couple of portages, this is a paddle that people don't really need boating experience to do. Canoes allow the largest number of less experienced people go - as long as you have a stern person with a little steering experience, that lets 2 people with no experience go. And when I say a little steering experience, I mean it - the first stretch of the paddle was really funny, people were going down the river sideways, backwards, spinning, lots of laughter, the guides were scooting around in their little recreational kayaks giving quick brushups to anyone who needed it, and by the time we got down to the first portage (which was also the first place anything bad was likely to happen if there wasn't at least a little control) everybody had their canoes mostly under control.
I was canoeing - I forgot to get anybody to take a picture of me and my two new paddling pals (I have lots of them, just I'm not in 'em) but if you look down to my very last gallery that should prove that I don't turn up my nose at a nice steady old canoe!
Great shot...did they have anything to stop you from going over, other than your common sense? By the way..do you happen to know if that is the monorail for the zoo in the back of the photo?
It is probably easier just to see if they glow in the dark.
The last time I saw the Bronx River was from the Monorail ride the Zoo had. The water was still murky back then.
